Why Machine Builders Specify It

Cast iron gears have different characteristics depending on the cast iron material chosen.

Good Abrasion Resistance

Cast iron contains graphite, which is lubricating. It forms a lubricating film during friction in the cast iron gear, improving the gear's wear resistance.

Good Shock Absorption

The graphite in cast iron absorbs mechanical vibration energy and hinders vibration propagation. This gives cast iron gears good shock absorption and reduces noise during operation.

Lower Cost

Cast iron costs less than stainless steel, copper alloys, and other materials. Because it contains graphite, it also cuts better, with little tool wear during processing, so both material and processing costs are lower.

Performance Parameters

Main performance parameters for cast iron gears, set according to your actual working conditions.

Cast Iron Gear Performance Parameters

Cast Iron Gear Performance Parameters

When producing cast iron gears, the specific performance parameters are determined according to the customer's actual working conditions. The table shows the main performance parameters for your reference.

Accuracy level is measured after finishing.
Engineering ParameterStandard RangeMaterial & Application Notes
Diameter Range3 mm – 300 mmSmall diameter (<20 mm): ductile iron is often used. Medium and large diameter: suitable for all types of cast iron; gray cast iron is mostly found in large low-speed gears.
Tooth TypeStraight, Helical, Bevel, InternalStraight: common. Helical: smooth, low noise, high load. Bevel: intersecting shaft drives (ductile iron). Internal: compact structure.
Modulus Range0.1 mm – 5.0 mmApplicable Standards: ISO 1328, DIN 3962, GB/T 10095
Accuracy & StrengthISO/DIN/GB Level 6 (after finishing)Tensile: Gray iron 150–350 MPa, Ductile iron 400–800 MPa. Hardness: Gray 170–250 HB, Ductile 170–300 HB.
Surface TreatmentPhosphating, Blackening, Quenching, Galvanized/NickelSelected to suit specific working conditions.

Production & Service Procedure

Every cast iron gear follows five production steps, from casting the blank to final inspection against your drawing.

Production & Service Procedure

Production Procedure

1

Make Blanks

Based on your gear drawings, we design and manufacture the mold, sand cast the gear blanks in volume, check them for defects, and select only defect-free blanks for rough machining.

2

Rough Machining

Turning, drilling, tapping, and gear hobbing create the positioning reference and gear shape. At this stage, the gear does not yet meet the required precision, accuracy, and roughness, so further operations follow.

3

Heat Treatment

Heat treatment improves strength, hardness, and wear resistance. Depending on the material and your needs, we choose annealing, normalizing, or surface quenching.

4

Finishing

After heat treatment, the gear has not yet reached ISO Level 6. Finishing and gear grinding correct the error so the gear accuracy reaches ISO Level 6.

5

Surface Treatment & Inspection

We select the right surface treatment for your working conditions to improve rust and wear resistance. Gears are then inspected on gear inspection machines, CMMs, and other equipment to confirm every parameter meets your drawing.

Industries That Use Cast Iron Gears

Our customized cast iron gears and drivetrains serve tobacco packaging equipment, food packaging equipment, and other machinery manufacturers. Gray cast iron gears suit low-speed, light-load, impact-free drives and large low-speed gears. Ductile iron gears handle medium to heavy loads with some impact, and are a common choice for bevel gears on intersecting shaft drives. Alloy cast iron gears are used where high wear resistance, corrosion resistance, or high-temperature operation is needed.

Application Scenarios

Frequently Asked Questions.

Everything you need to know about cast iron gears: materials, sizes, standards, and treatments.

Which cast iron is best for my gear?

Choose gray cast iron for low-speed, light-load gears without impact. Choose ductile iron for medium to heavy loads with some impact. Choose alloy cast iron for gears that need high wear resistance, corrosion resistance, or high-temperature operation.
