Materials for Waterjet Cutting

Metals

Metal Waterjet Cutting

Abrasive waterjet cutting — a high-pressure stream of water mixed with 80-mesh garnet abrasive — handles heavy aluminum plates (up to 150mm), titanium Ti-6Al-4V, hardened tool steels, copper, and stainless steel without warping or material temper loss.

What to Expect from Waterjet-Cut Parts

Waterjet cutting produces accurate profiles, clean edges, and minimal material distortion across diverse thicknesses.

01 /

Clean, Burr-Free Edges

Cold abrasive stream yields smooth, satin-matte edge textures requiring little to no secondary deburring.

02 /

Zero Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ)

No heat input preserves the structural integrity, temper, and metallurgical properties of pre-hardened alloys.

03 /

Narrow Kerf Width

Precision 1mm abrasive jet allows tight nesting of adjacent components, maximizing raw material utilization.

04 /

Controlled Edge Taper

Our 5-axis dynamic taper compensation heads eliminate natural waterjet V-taper for perfectly perpendicular walls.

05 /

Minimal Striations

Adjustable feed rates (Q4/Q5 quality) eliminate lower edge striations even on thick 100mm+ blocks.

06 /

Low-Pressure Piercing Marks

Gentle automated vacuum piercing prevents cracking and surface spalling on delicate composites and glass.

Design Guidelines for Waterjet Cutting

01

Minimum Feature Size

Avoid designing wall features thinner than the material thickness. Larger feature proportions ensure high dimensional stability.

02

Internal Corner Radii

The abrasive jet naturally creates an internal radius equal to half the nozzle kerf (~0.5mm). Allow for slight internal fillet radii in corners.

03

Hole Size Recommendations

Through-holes should ideally have diameters equal to or greater than the plate thickness to ensure rapid, perpendicular piercing.

04

Part Spacing & Nesting

When nesting components on large sheets, maintain at least 3-5mm spacing between parts to prevent thermal or pressure deformation.

05

Material Thickness Scaling

Thicker plates require slower cutting speeds. Specify functional tolerances that reflect plate thickness to optimize manufacturing costs.

06

Simplify Contours & Profiles

Eliminating redundant micro-facets and tiny decorative grooves can drastically compress waterjet cycle times and part pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Waterjet cutting is a completely cold process that creates zero heat-affected zones (HAZ). It can cut virtually any material up to 150mm thick (including non-conductive plastics, composites, glass, and highly reflective copper/brass) without thermal distortion or melting.
